Columbia, MO Roadside Pollinator Project
In 2020, the city of Columbia, MO began to transform approximately 26 acres of roadside and median sites throughout the city from mowed turf into native prairie, to create pollinator habitat along previously unutilized corridors. DJM has been responsible for stewardship of these developing areas as well as several established prairies since Spring of 2020.
Construction Figures (2018-2021):
― 19 acres seeded prior to 2020 growing season (~230 lbs of native seed)
― 4 new acres added prior to 2021 growing season, plus annual overseeding of all other developing areas (~380 lbs of native seed)
― Two seed mixes – Low-Profile Median Mix and Roadside Mix
― 3.8 acres of established prairie
― Stewardship includes timed high mowing, spot herbicide treatments, overseeding, and twice annual transect monitoring to determine progress.
